Note 2: Octopus is an electronic payment system available to users of public transport. An electronic card carried by individual users is read by machines as they pass through gated entries and exits and vehicle doors. More recently it has become a means of payment for many public facilities, vending machines, and the like. In the report entitled Hong Kong as an Information Society a more detailed breakdown of Octopus usage is provided including transport and nontransport related purchases.
